 Wedding trends may come and go and dress styles at school formals change each year, but wearing a beautiful corsage or buttonhole never goes out of fashion.

The name ‘buttonhole’ is derived from the French word ‘boutonniere’, and although the tradition of wearing flower buttonholes and corsages dates back hundreds of years, it’s very much the ‘done thing’ at formal occasions. 

Traditionally, the corsage was worn pinned to the right hand lapel, but today’s preference is to wear a wristlet, hair corsage, attached to the purse etc.   When it comes to weddings, the accepted norm is for the bride and groom’s mothers and grandmothers to wear a corsage, as well as for other important female guests to wear one too. 

The boutonniere is usually smaller than the corsage but complementary to it, and generally comprises a single flower (rose, orchid, carnation) which is bound together with a bit of foliage and some ribbon, and worn on the left lapel.  Traditionally, these are pushed through the buttonhole but can also be pinned on discreetly.  At weddings, these are worn by males of significance in the wedding party, including the groom, the best man, fathers of the bride and the groom and the ushers. 

When it comes to high school formals, the guys and the girls exchange buttonholes and proms, but to make things easier, often the parents get together beforehand and organise it all.

At weddings, corsages are usually chosen to co-ordinate with the outfit of the wearer whilst buttonholes complement the existing colour theme.

The traditional method of making a fresh flower corsage was to arrange a few larger blooms together with some smaller ones and some foliage, and bind together with silk ribbon and fasten with a pearl pin.
